Nicola Ellis is a visual artist base in Manchester. She is interested in systems of value, function and circulation within places of industry and research. Operating within existing workplace ecosystems, she makes artworks which respond to the relationships between people, materials and processes.
Ellis makes site responsive installations, sculpture, drawing, video and photography. Her work often features loaned or exchanged waste materials, transforming them into a kind of currency. This temporary appropriation creates an additional micro- cycle within the materials timeline, referencing recyclability and fluctuating physical states.
Ellis is currently undertaking the ACE funded project Return to Ritherdon, the focus of which is a two year artist placement at Ritherdon & Co Ltd- a family owned manufacturer of steel enclosures based in Darwen Lancashire UK. The project creates situations in which an Artist and Manufacturer can witness each other work in the factory, studio, gallery and respective communities. The aim is to identify, investigate and utilise similarities and differences for the benefit of both parties.
