Sarah Randles is an artist based in Manchester.
"Taking inspiration from nature, I collect found objects that I draw or use directly within my work. With the use of collage, assemblage and drawing, my work merges the scientific with the fictional to create surreal characters and objects.
The process of collecting and hunting for materials is just as important as the final outcome. From browsing charity and antique shops to foraging in the countryside, I am always on the look out for unusual objects to work with.
Using vintage cabinet cards as a starting point, I am altering a ready-made narrative, appropriating it’s history to create imagery that obstructs or intrudes on the human element and plays with imagination. Influenced by Dadaism and Surrealism, I strive to create something that is aesthetically pleasing but also slightly uneasy on the eye. The uncanny is something I try to portray in all my work- the idea that something is strangely familiar. The additions I make to the subjects become an extension of their personality, to the point I forget what they looked like before.
