Painting and monoprints using oil paint and oil sticks

From Nancy:

"This series of three monoprints I made from my studio windows, originally studies that responded to the site, concerned with light and landscape.  I have drawn into these monoprints using oil sticks and linseed oil,  attempting to manipulate the paint against the smoothness of the paper and the slick of the oil to build atmosphere and through transparency of paint, capture that quality of winter light and how it affects colour in the landscape."

Nancy Collantine is an artist living and working in Manchester in the north west of England.  Painting colour and light, material layers and organising space are the main concerns of her practice.  Her work is often site-specific responding to memory and nostalgia in the context of place.

"As a medium of control and chaos, I am drawn to painting because it is exciting and challenging and I can’t ever predict the outcome. The process of layering, editing and eliminating is my way to find out how I really feel about a subject.  It is the most honest and intuitive commentary on my experience of the world.

I respond to place or space as a starting point and I layer drawing colour, paper collage or monoprint, arranging relationships of forms and to visually work my way around a subject to make my own personal response through my interaction with the work, which could be figurative or non-figurative painting or drawing.

The space and environment in which the work will exist interests me and I enjoy making work that is for a specific space in its physical form as well as providing material for the content of the work.

In recording my responses to a subject or place, I am often referring to memories and raising questions about my values and critical judgements.  Most recently these have related to themes nostalgia, security, comfort and belonging, social constructions that cushion, imprison and exclude."
