About the artist:

Petronio Costa is an artist originally from Aliança-Pernambuco, northeast Brazil, and now lives in Manchester, UK. His artwork is influenced by the fascinating world of Maracatu-Rural, a performance genre that originated in his province. It's normally seen during the annual carnival and is a truly enchanting sight. In particular, Petronio's artwork concentrates on "Gola do caboclo de lança" (vest of the guardian).

This costume is an important part of the Maracatu-Rural and symbolically gives power to whoever wears it and gives protection to all the other performers. His passion is sewing and embroidery and he uses different coloured sequins to creatively explore his culture and roots. Petronio also was part of a group called "Sonho da Rabeca" and Maracatu leão Nazareno when he was in Brazil. He believes it's time to show a different face of Brazilian culture and to show people the extravagance of one of Brazil's most unique carnivals.
