A painting created during the first few months of lockdown after reflecting on human interactions and relationships within the context of social distancing.

Using a cast of three small vessels Helen wanted to convey her experience of coming across friends whilst walking in the park and having to chat standing spaced apart.

The objects in her still life paintings are usually configured in close proximity to one another, letting their shapes, colours and pattern play off one another. In this painting she has positioned the three subjects separately and spaced apart whilst still connecting them in conversation by their inward orientation.

In order to keep an openness and sense of space within the painting, the background pattern is deliberately subtle and the vessels themselves have simple forms and minimal decoration.

Original painting. Unframed.

2020, Gouache on cartridge paper 50cm x 50cm

From the artist:

My paintings and prints are inspired by my love of mid century design and are a celebration of colour, form and pattern.

I have a HND in textile and surface pattern design and these studies continue to have a guiding effect on my work. Other influences come from having worked in various creative industries including the ceramic studio of Majolica Works in the Manchester Craft and Design Centre and more lately developing my computer art work as part of a design team in Salford Quays. I paint from my home studio in Levenshulme and I am a member of Hot Bed Press in Manchester where I make my linocut and screen prints.

My work centres around domestic pottery, jugs, coffee pots and vases and is a reflection of my adoration of mid century ceramics and the forms, colours and patterns that reflect our wider tastes and times. In my still life compositions I aim to capture the different personalities of each piece, highlighting their individuality with the curve of a handle or the angular shape of a spout. I like to make a contrast between their glazed decoration, colours, pattern and textures and then echo these elements throughout the design of the painting or print.

I produce linocuts and screen prints, digital illustration prints and still-life gouache paintings.
